Syllabus

¡Bienvenido a la clase de Español II!

Course Objective:

This subject is a continuation of skills learned in Spanish I, which is to teach the developmental stages in reading, writing, listening, and speaking. Emphasis is given to strengthening vocabulary as well as comprehension of idiomatic expressions. Also included is a reference to culture, customs and current events of Latin America and the Caribbean.

Chapters Covered:

Ch. 1:  My Friends and I (introductions, socializing)

Ch. 2:  A Trip Abroad (preparing to travel, describing cities/towns)

Ch. 3:  Daily Life (daily routines, responsibilities, hobbies)

Ch. 4:  Advancing in Our Studies (opinions/advice about school)

Ch. 5:  Get In Shape!  (healthy lifestyles)

Ch. 6:  Visiting the City (describing experiences to new places)

Ch. 7:  Do You Know Your Past Well?  (childhood activities)

Ch. 8:  Having Fun (trips to the zoo, amusement park, movies…)

Ch. 9:  Market Day!  (negotiating prices, describing items)

Ch. 10:  Tell Me A Story (setting scene, continuing, ending a story)

Grading and Assessment:

  • Quizzes:  Each section of the chapter is divided into 3 sections.   There will be approximately 1 quiz per week. Smaller projects and activities will fall in this category.
  • Tests:  After learning and practicing the third and final section of each chapter, students will take a chapter test. Larger projects will fall in this category.
  • Homework:  Students will be expected to complete all homework assignments.  While they are not worth points, they will appear in the grade book as a “YES” or “NO”, indicating to the parent/guardian when the student’s work was completed or not.  Homework aids in achievement and completion of it often reflects a student’s overall achievement in class.

Overall Grade:

The course grade will be weighted and calculated as follows:   40% Intra-Unit Assessments (graded assignments, quizzes, smaller projects/presentations/essays, etc.), 50% End-of-Unit Assessments (cornerstone assessments, unit exams, larger projects/presentations/essays, etc.), and 10% Final Exam.

Reassessment:

Reassessment will be available upon student request and per teacher discretion to those who have completed all unit work on time and have been remediated on the subject material. The reassessment will be different than the original version and the score of the reassessment will replace the original score.  The remediation and reassessment must occur as soon as possible after the original assessment.

Late Work:

Graded assignments may be submitted late for reduced credit within 2 weeks (10 school days) of the original due date, with the exception of the end of each marking period.  A deduction of 10% per day will occur, with a maximum deduction of 50%, up until 2 weeks after the original due date.  Work that is submitted more than 2 weeks late or past the end of the marking period of the assignment in question will receive no credit.

Speak as much ESPAÑOL as possible!
Attend class daily PREPARED with writing utensil, notebook, textbook, and workbook.
Enthusiastically contribute to class activities EVERY DAY not only by raising your hand to volunteer answers, but also actively working during group work and staying on task.
RESPECT each other’s individuality, privacy, and differences.
Act respectfully and appropriately during class.
Find out what you missed and make it up promptly.
Communicate regularly with the teacher, especially if having difficulties.
